Beryl is a gemstone that has been loved for centuries. It comes in many colors and is also available in large sizes. Beryl is therefore ideally suited in large jewelery such as pendants and brooches where weight or size are no obstacle. Emerald, with its intense green color, is the most famous of this gemstone family.
Blue beryl is called aquamarine, the yellow variant heliodor and the pink and orange tones morganite. Green beryl is a variant that is not colored by chromium and therefore shows a more yellow-green color.
The name Beryl probably comes from the Greek "beryllos", a name used in ancient times for green-blue stones. The word "glasses" is derived from the name beryl. The Roman emperor Nero is said to have had glasses with beryl lenses.
The color palette that typifies beryl is the result of traces of various metals in the material. As mentioned, emerald gets its deep color from the presence of chromium and vanadium. Iron provides blue and yellow tones and manganese for pink.
Morganite in particular has become popular in recent years. This is partly due to Queen Maxima's preference for jewelery with morganite.
High quality beryl stones are a good investment. All beryls with a well-saturated color will remain highly sought after in the future.
